Phnom Da and Angkor Borei

A Day Trip to the Birthplace of Cambodia – Phnom Da and Angkor Borei

In the early morning, we travel by car from the hotel to a small local pier, hidden among the rice fields of Takeo province. Our boat for this journey is the tireless “Papcio Chmiel” – a traditional composite vessel of the Mekong Delta, perfectly adapted for navigating shallow waters and narrow canals. Comfortable, safe, and full of character, it adds a touch of local charm to our adventure.

Depending on the water level, we enjoy breakfast either on the boat or as a picnic in the rice fields. The scenery is peaceful and green, and sometimes we pass small villages where children wave to us from the riverbanks.

Our first stop is Phnom Da Temple, the oldest religious site in Cambodia. Built in the 6th or 7th century during the time of the ancient Funan Kingdom, the temple stands on a small hill with stone steps leading to the top. Below, there are natural caves that were once used as sacred places. A local English-speaking guide will explain the history and importance of this site.

After our visit to the temple, we continue by boat to Angkor Borei, known in ancient times as Vyādhapura, meaning “City of Hunters.” Over 1500 years ago, this was the capital of Funan – the first large kingdom in Southeast Asia. Angkor Borei was once a busy trade city connected to India and China. Many historical objects have been found here, showing early Indian, Hindu, and Buddhist influence in Khmer culture.

In the small museum, we will see sculptures, ancient tools, and old carvings that help us understand how this region became the starting point of Khmer civilization. From this place, the idea of Cambodia began to grow, many centuries before Angkor was built.

The people of Takeo are very friendly and welcoming. Life here is calm and traditional. This is not a touristy place – it’s the real Cambodia.

After our visit, we return by boat to the same pier. A car is waiting for us, and we drive back to the hotel.
